
Dr Tom Middelburg, MD, PhD, was trained as a consultant dermatologist at the prestigious Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, The Netherlands where he completed his training in 2011. Within the broad specialty of dermatology, he has developed particular interests in all treatment modalities for skin cancer including Mohs micrographic surgery and in dermatopathology, venous disease and light based skin therapies including lasers and photodynamic therapy.
He has worked in highly rated clinical teaching and training hospitals in the Netherlands before moving to New Zealand in June 2016 where he currently works as a Consultant Dermatologist and Mohs Surgeon at Christchurch Hospital and at KM Surgical, Avenue Health.
Tom is a certified Mohs micrographic surgeon and Mohs trainer with the European Society for Micrographic Surgery. He helped to initiate and develop a very successful Mohs service in the eastern part of The Netherlands before he came to New Zealand. At Christchurch Hospital he has been the main driver behind setting up the first public Mohs service in the South Island.
In 2014 he completed his PhD: “Photodynamic Therapy of Skin using Porphyrin Precursors: Optical Monitoring Vascular Effects and Personalised Medicine” and has authored over 35 publications in medical journals.
When he is not at work, Tom loves New Zealand for its beautiful people, scenery and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. He used to be an active chess player when he was younger and holds the title of International Master in chess, having played at the highest national and European level.
