Sun screens are needed to protect exposed skin from the harsh and damaging effects of Southern Hemisphere sunlight.
Sun screens should have a high protection factor (SPF 30+) to protect from UVB rays which can cause skin cancer and broad spectrum cover to protect from UVA rays which damage collagen and worsen photo aging. KM Surgical recommends Neutrogena 70+ sunscreen available at KM Surgical.
The fairer your skin type the more you need to protect yourself from sun exposure which increases the activity of enzymes which breakdown collagen and elastin; the two important proteins that form the structure and strength of you skin.

Sad but true - tanned skin is damaged skin!, and freckles and age spots tell as that you have been over exposed to the sun's rays.
-
UVA rays penetrate even deeper than the tan and damage the dermis resulting in wrinkles, leathery skin, prominent sebaceous glands and poor skin tone and texture.
-
KM Surgical can recommend sun screens which are suitable for all types of skin. Sometimes special skin testing is necessary if patients have very sensitive and allergy prone skins.

In New Zealand the sun's rays are at their strongest in early summer but you can sun burn at any time of year and even in cloudy days. So remember those sun screens and cover up when you can.
