UVB is short for ultraviolet B, a part of the light spectrum that has anti-inflammatory effects on your immune system. Therefore, UVB phototherapy can be used to treat inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis. It is similar to a solarium but the differences are that with UVB phototherapy only a specific part of the UVB spectrum (narrow-band UVB) is used, whereas in solariums broad UVB and UVA is used. Also, with phototherapy, we monitor the light dose carefully to ensure effective and safe delivery of the light.
Generally, a course of phototherapy consists of about 20-30 treatments that are given 2 or 3 times a week. Over the duration of the course, the light dose is gradually increased depending on the reaction of your skin. This type of UV treatment is considered safe and does not significantly increase your risk of skin cancer.
